Last week we read a story called Clarence the Copy Cat. It was about a cat that lived in a bookstore. He had lived in several places, but was always kicked out because he wouldn't catch any mice. Truth be told, he didn't like hurting mice at all.
One day, something crazy happens when a mouse is seen scurrying around the bookstore, and the copy machine comes to the rescue.

A good amount of my students weren't exactly sure what a copy machine was, so when we finished the story, we took a trip to the "work room" in our school office and made our own version of Clarence. We saw the bright lights, we heard the whirring noises, and we felt the warm copied paper shoot into the tray. It was almost like magic in the eyes of 2nd graders.
Our "copy cat/raccoon" is Rocky ... and he's going to do a fine job of keeping the mice away in Room 1.
Sometimes the best lessons just happen without even really being planned. This was one of those times, and this teacher followed her heart by showing instead of telling.
